This page is dedicated to the memory of Al Hirt (1922-1999)

Message from Curt Chapman:  "I know what it means to miss New Orleans.  The song you hear playing on this page reflects the sentiment of a great many people who cherish this city on the Mississippi River.  Why?  It's not really something that can be adequately put into words.  It's something that you have to experience for yourself so that you can fully understand the lure of this truly great city and the wonderful people who call it home.  Although the discovery is up to you, I've given you some links to get you started."

Gotta love this place!!!

CURT'S LAMENT:  In the past, when I went to New Orleans, the Top of the Mart was one of my favorite spots in the city!  On the 33rd floor of the World Trade Center, #2 Canal St., this revolving lounge offered a superb view of the French Quarter and the River. It had wonderful specialty drinks and light food.

THE TOP OF THE MART CLOSED THOUGH IN AUGUST OF 2001 AFTER 35 YEARS IN BUSINESS!!!  IT WAS CONVERTED INTO A NEW TRENDY PLACE CALLED 360 DEGREES.  ALTHOUGH I'M SURE IT'S REALLY NICE NOW, I REALLY MISS THE OLD ATMOSPHERE.

Curt in the Top of the Mart on June 30, 2001
TO TOP OF THE MART OWNER JED STEDMAN:
THANKS FOR THE RIDE!!!

Sadly, another New Orleans tradition is no more....
McKenzie's Pastry Shoppes, gone but not forgotten.

Yes, you read that correctly.  Despite being saved by Marc Leunissen and Sherif Ebrahimin who bought the bakery in May of 2000, the business ran into financial trouble exactly a year later and the partners were forced to shutter 20 of McKenzie's 42 stores.  But, it was too little, too late.  On July 17, 2001, the remaining outlets were closed and the bakery best known for its Mardi Gras king cakes allowed its ovens to rest for the first time in nearly 70 years.
